# Build and refine your project in Bolt one step at a time

> Build a project in Bolt one step at a time. Plan first, add one feature per prompt, refine what Bolt builds, and restore an earlier version if needed.

Bolt builds your project from the prompts you send. When you break your work into small steps, you can test each change and undo it if it doesn't work. This section covers the tools for each stage of building your project in Bolt.

## Build one layer at a time

Finish and test each layer of your project before you start the next one. A typical order is:

1. Plan the project.
2. Add pages and navigation.
3. Add data.
4. Add logins.
5. Build the core feature.
6. Add more features.
7. Polish the design.
8. Publish.

In each prompt, describe one complete workflow. For example, a booking form with its fields, rules, and confirmation email is one feature, not three.

## Plan before you build

Plan Mode lets you talk through your project with Bolt without changing your code. Use it before you start a project or add a large feature, and when working through an issue.
