Bolt builds what you describe, so a clear description helps Bolt build what you have in mind. When you plan before you build and write effective prompts, you also use fewer tokens on changes you didn’t intend.

Talk through your project before you build

Plan Mode lets you discuss your project with Bolt without changing any of your code. Use it to decide what you need to build and how to approach it, or to figure out why something isn’t working. When your plan is ready, switch to Build Mode to apply it.

Describe one workflow at a time

Describe one complete workflow in each prompt. A workflow covers who uses it, which screens they see, which statuses it moves through, and what happens when something goes wrong. For example, a booking form with its fields, rules, and confirmation email makes up one workflow, not three. Writing the workflow in plain sentences gives Bolt the details it needs.
  • Prompt effectively: Plan your first prompt, then improve it automatically and guide Bolt’s focus.
  • Save and manage prompts: Save prompts in the Prompt Library and reuse them, or apply the built-in prompts Bolt provides.

Keep your project context focused

As your project grows, the context Bolt carries with each prompt grows too, which affects how many tokens you use. To keep context focused, add persistent instructions once and clear context you no longer need. You can also choose the right agent for each task.
